CAST

“My mad dad doesn’t get us.”   This lead character looks like and has the voice of an angel. Rose is an amalgamation of all that’s good, she’s intelligent, loyal, fearless, ambitious and so in love, to the extent that she allows all of her decisions to be guided by the emotions which patter in her heart. Even though her parents do not think that she is good enough to make it as a singing superstar, Rose has enough self-belief and tenacity to turn any negativity into positivity. The love that Rose has for her boyfriend is her fuel… but an energy source can deplete and when it’s exhausted, like a balloon, it deflates. Rose’s relationship and the love that she gets from it, is therefore her life support.

Played by ALEYSHA-JADE MELVILLE

Played by NICKY DUNE

“The streets. It’s crazy out there.” An only child, born in Nigeria, Ekon’s a Prince, a title bestowed on all first-born males in his family. Whilst the acclaim doesn’t come with fortune, Ekon wears it well, bountiful with other assets; he’s wise, kind, courageous and courteous. All obstacles are surmountable as he’s got the girl he loves by his side, who gives him strength. There is nothing that he won’t do for her, including changing his life. His only aim in life is to make her happy.

Played by LEON HERBERT

“Stop that bloody racket!”   He appears to be a heartless, impassionate bully, but scratch beneath the surface, this character is trying to shield his daughter from the pitfalls of the music industry, because he’s had first-hand experience. The constant rejections hardened him and so whilst he knows that his child does have a beautiful voice, inherited from himself, he’s unsupportive of her desire to pursue a career in the music industry and equally unsupportive of her becoming a mother under his roof.

Played by VANESSA WHITE SMITH

“Rose, you’re too young to be thinking about this stuff.”   From Barbados, whilst this character loves her daughter, she takes her marriage vows seriously and is fiercely loyal to her husband, putting his wishes before all and everyone else’s. Her choices make her appear misguided and weak. Breda just wants a quiet life and home and anyone tampering with that, has got to go, even if she gave birth t that person.

DIRECTOR’S VISION CHRYSTAL ROSE

With statistics for teenage homelessness, pregnancies and adoption of their children, escalating at alarming rates, I was intrigued to show characters facing these situations and how they would deal with these emotional, physical and emotional calamities.

Having left home at 15, I fell pregnant aged 16 and I had my child at 17. The father was 4 years older and therefore technically, this was statutory rape, but we were in love and as far as we were concerned, the world misunderstood the true essence and depths of our relationship.

Due to being 21, the father of my child was able to get a council flat, but I had always wondered what may have happened if we were both 15, or indeed, if I had been alone and forced to take another path?

What if two 15-year-olds had done nothing wrong, but fall in love with each other? What if, in having their own baby, they were faced with insurmountable dilemmas which pushed them to make various life changing decisions? How would they survive? What would the consequences of their actions be? Does love really conquer all regardless of age, wealth and health.

The backdrop is the residential suburb of Acton, West London where elegant terraced Edwardian and Victorian houses line paved streets away from the built-up tower blocks in the nearby South Acton Estate, a concrete jungle. ‘Too Young For Love’ explores the effects of broken hearts and dreams in two in two well behaved Black characters from middle-class families, who want nothing, but to be together and the lengths they pursue to maintain their unity.

My aim is to exacerbate any complacency with regard to teen love, pull on the heart strings of the viewer, start or continue deep dialogues with all watch the drama which will honestly reflect the raw realities of life on the streets. ‘Too Young For Love’ culminates with the baby the love bird teenagers create being left in a telephone box for another to raise.

The short is the prequel to ‘United Kingdom Reparations’, a feature which starts with that baby being found and follows that child’s life as she matures and becomes a barrister.
She finds her father in Nigeria and together they trace and unravel a family history embroiled in the ravages of the slave trade.
